Lord, let it be so, soon!
In 2014, a few months before the passing of Vasile Dan (Nick’s father), he imparted his firm belief that God’s vision for Sanitariums and medical missionary work remains unchanged – to establish these institutions around the globe, situating one near each major city. At that time, we had significant reservations regarding the preparedness of the global Church for such an undertaking.
Fast forward five years to the World Division Council in Jamaica, the General Conference leaders along with the GC Health Department leaders unveiled an ambitious vision: establishing a Sanitarium near each city with a population of one million or more worldwide. By the summer of 2023, we have seen tangible evidence of the revival of the Sanitarium concept in Europe. A conference organized by the EUD/TED Division on “How to Start, Develop, and Manage a Lifestyle Center” marked a significant milestone in affirming our commitment to this vision.
Unbeknownst to us and the organizers, church leaders and laypersons from various European countries expressed far greater interest than anticipated. More than 200 individuals attended, surpassing the expected 60-70 participants, many of whom were already taking steps to initiate health work in their respective countries. Through discussions with numerous groups, it became evident that they require guidance, clarification, and mentorship.

This realization has intensified over the past two years. As the OCI Regional Vice President for the EUD territories, we traveled to countries with substantial potential but few or no Adventist medical institutions, recognizing the urgent need for support and development in these regions.
In the past 30-40 years, numerous untested ideas about the ideal model for sanitarium operations have been discussed globally and in Europe. One common belief has been that large sanitariums, such as Herghelia, are not suitable for Western countries, and that smaller, “home-sanitarium” sized facilities should be established instead. This perspective led to various small, wellness and educational initiatives being labeled as Lifestyle or Wellness Centers. However, this approach often faced challenges. Small facilities struggle to hire qualified health professionals, which affects the quality of services provided. Without high-quality services, they have difficulty attracting enough patients, resulting in incomplete occupancy and financial instability. This makes it challenging to pay staff adequately and maintain service quality, often requiring continuous donations for operation and salaries.
This situation sometimes leads to yielding to the temptation to offer services in unproven areas and providing unfounded hope to patients with serious or terminal illnesses. Another issue frequently encountered in Europe is the use of healing methods and therapies that are not recognized by either the Church or science. Educating people to understand physiology and using only evidence-based treatments that enhance the body’s natural healing mechanisms remains an ongoing challenge.
In January 2025, we traveled to France and Italy. In France, we visited three properties (two in Southern France and one near Paris) that are potential future sanitarium sites. We also met with the president of the Franco-Belgian Union near Paris. There is a group interested in starting a sanitarium, which was the reason for our visit. Most of them attended training on “How to start and manage a sanitarium” at Herghelia in June 2024. The two main issues encountered were confusion about the scope and size of a sanitarium and uncertainty about effective therapeutic methods, which affected team cohesion. However, working with the prospective team in France has shown positive developments: the project is closely coordinated with Union leadership, a dedicated physician committed to advancing the project has joined, several experienced professionals are willing to be part of the team, and many laypeople in the construction business are enthusiastic about the project. We need your prayer for France, this is a very, very secular country in great need of the Hope of a Redeemer. A Sanitarium would be a perfect entering wedge, a natural bridge to connect with the otherwise unreachable strata of society. Please pray for France, God loves “Egyptians”, too!
In Rome we have been the guests of the Italian Union president and his wife. He invited us to advise a family who intends to buy a former hotel and run it like a Wellness Center in Northern Italy, near Milano. Spending a long weekend with the Italian Union President’s family was an excellent occasion to share the vision about the Adventist Sanitarium System Accelerator and to know each other’s visions, a time so useful to lay a good foundation for a balanced, mature, forward looking Sanitarium project in Italy.
Please pray for Italy also, it is long overdue in both countries, France and Italy, to start a Adventist Health Institution as a center of influence. Along with Spain, these three countries are the only countries of EUD Division without a Sanitarium. Between the three of them there are a combined 170 million people living there – France 65, Italy 58 and Spain 47 million! Imagine how many precious souls are going to be touched by the genuine medical missionary work of at least one sanitarium in each of these countries. We trust that this is possible – Lord, let it be so, soon!

Newsletter XIX Summary
In 2014, a few months before the passing of Vasile Dan (Nick’s father), he imparted his firm belief that God’s vision for Sanitariums and medical missionary work remains unchanged – to establish these institutions around the globe, situating one near each major city.
It was 2001 when I got a chance to visit Herghelia for the first time. I came here to present the program of Sola Scriptura’s Institute of Bible Studies, for the blind. At that time as a young couple – my husband and I were involved in this project as volunteers. We always believed in mission and found ways to get involved.
As a therapist in Herghelia I am delighted to meet people of different professional backgrounds, different social status, different personalities, different beliefs and spiritual orientations. One of my patients in a spring session was Mrs. F.H, a very delicate, special lady, that used to be an university professor in theatrical art and piano. She just got retired and had difficulties in handling the new amount of free time in her life…
One day as I was walking from the Center to my office, during the lunch break, I was about to pass by a nice elderly couple that seemed to start earlier their daily afternoon walk. We greeted each other and as we were heading in the same direction and they seemed delighted to socialize, I joined them. The lady shared the fact that this is the first time for them in Herghelia and that she is totally amazed of what is happening here. She mentioned that it was her husband’s idea to come but she congratulates herself for being open to it.
Missis L. C was very eager to introduce to me her sister S – who was accompanying her to Herghelia for the first time. When my presentation was over, the two ladies enthusiastically approached me and we happily chat together for a while. She brought me greetings from another sweet lady, a good friend of hers with whom she came to Herghelia the previous time, when we actually first met.
Coming back to Herghelia for audit this year I got the chance to meet again in the session old friends and also to make the new ones. Soon a good size study group was formed. Isaiah, my Pentecostal friend I met in Herghelia previously, was back this time and proposed to people interested in spiritual topics to join us, in our attempt to find answers to bible’s prophesies. So we decided to meet each evening at 9 p.m. in the library. We prayed together and study the Bible.
“Daniel 10 Days Challenge” is a lifestyle-changing program organized by Herghelia Lifestyle Center at the end of each Herghelia Cuisine online cooking course. Based on the prophet Daniel’s story, this challenge offers individuals a guided program to pursue a healthier lifestyle while also deepening their faith.
In a world where stories ignite change, we are blessed to share tales that touch the soul and inspire action. This year, God has graced us with narratives of courage and transformation that strengthen our mission and fill our hearts with gratitude.
Please pray for and support the Sanitarium Global Movement. We claim the following precious promise that the Lord will inspire, lead and protect each particular project started according with His plans: “The Lord has presented matters to me again and again, and given me instructions to say that God Himself is Ruler and Counselor and Guardian of every Sanitarium that shall be established”. Ellen G. White Letter 180, 1901
We want to establish a Worthy Students Fund to help prospective future Sanitarium leaders attend the annual “How to start and manage Sanitariums in the XXI Century” and cover part of the funds related to the production of a Loma Linda University Certificate online course in this field. We are working with LLU to produce such a course to be available to the SDA Church at large.
